Full disclosure, I work for Canon.
With that said, the Canon VP6000 series is the market leader in up time and productivity for what you are looking to do.
Compare them all, talk to current customers of each brand, ask them about reliability, productivity, service, etc...
In my opinion (and I would say this if I didn't work for Canon, and did when I was a customer) the VP6000 series from Oce'/Canon is one of the best printers they make.
Make sure you look at these in your review, you will be glad you did.
If you want more info, please contact me and I can get you connected with the right people.

Subject: Black ink imaging on pre-printed shells
Hi Everyone!
What device do you use to print black ink variable data to a pre-printed shell in higher quantities – 50,000+
We have a couple of high end digital presses but they can't compete on larger quantities.
Thanks!
