We would like to measure the color temperature in our various light booths in our press room. There used to be a way to do so with an i1Pro spectro via ColorMatch. However, X-Rite has discontinued this software, and their current version of profiling software (i1Profiler) doesn't provide a way for measuring color temperature. While it is capable of measuring ambient light while profiling a monitor, you are only given X and Y coordinates of the measured result.

So, with all this in mind, does anyone know how to either convert X and Y coordinates into color temperature or is there another means by which we could measure the color temperature of our light booths?

    Hi Patrick,

There is a software named "BabelColor CT & A" which you can use to verify if your viewing
    condition conform to ISO 3664:2009.

Yes, I just did this yesterday.

There are two pieces: 1) take multiple readings with a spectrophotometer, 2) interpret the results.
i1 Profiler can check the light readings in the booth. I used another software to analyze the resulting data - ChromaChecker's Lighting audit with i1Pro. (I don't work for ChromaChecker.)

The X-Rite i1 Profiler software with an attached spectrophotometer can be used to take (9) readings in the light booth. This process requires the installation of a lighting diffuser.  The lighting diffuser is an obscure "cap" looking device. It is often found in a separate plastic box and looks like a "cover" for the spectrophotometer's reading head. On the diffuser itself, there are two nested pieces: 1) a protective cover, 2) the diffuser with a "white dot" filter.

In i1 Profiler software with an attached spectrophotometer , select the Advanced mode and navigate to Printer (CMYK). There is a section named Profiling. One of the workflow phases is named Lighting and is accessible via the Lightbulb/Gear icon. Next to Ambient light, select Measure... from the pop-up menu. Take multiple readings (9) - as if a grid of 3 rows and 3 columns exists in the illuminated viewing area. This data is saved in a .lxf file format. The lxf files will be uploaded for analysis.

In ChromaChecker, add a new light source and upload the data. The ChromaChecker Lighting inspector can create an analysis report describing the lighting conditions and a pass/fail indication.

Here is a web page with an input form for color calculations.  One of the output boxes is Color Temperature.  So you would enter your (x,y) coordinates and it will display the color temperature.  On this pape is a button labeled "Calc" and on the Calc page is a menu option "Color Calculator.

Welcome to Bruce Lindbloom's Web Site

Much simpler than creating an ilx file and importing that into a 3rd party software.
Enter the (x,y) and set Y=1.0 and click on the button xyY and the CCT will appear.

    Good Morning,

Thanks to all that contributed to this discussion. I received clarification that ChromaChecker.com is a free tool for the light booths. Only print and instrument  tracking is limited to a 30 day trial. I have re-posted the original post below:

Our ChromaChecker Color Conformance platform allows you to assess your lights booths to ISO 3664 (2009) with an appropriate instrument. An i1 with the free i1Profiler software can capture light booth data and provide a fairly complete ISO assessment (i1 does not have full precision required by ISO for a complete audit) and will meet your described needs. ChromaChecker will not only provide a CRF 95% percentile of how close each light booth is to D50, but it will also allow you to compare how close each light booth is to every other light booth in your supply chain including customer light booths with numeric feedback helping you to understand which colors are most different when displayed under different booths. It will also track the light booth over time so you can tell when you need to replace the bulbs instead of guessing, or doing it once a year. We have a video tutorial that takes you through every step from measuring the light booth using i1Profiler to uploading the measurement data to ChromaChecker and interpreting the results. Registering and using ChromaChecker.com for the first 30 days is free, so you can try it out, and you can contact me if you have any questions.
