    ·

I have a client that is mailing about 150 cards per week and they are tired of the USPS barcode stickers on the cards when they get delivered. They have asked us to barcode them. Of course my software encodes the addresses, but I can't presort the data to export Alpha-numeric characters to print the barcode. Is anyone else generating non-presorted barcodes and if so how?

we use accuzip for mailing. the program allows us to barcode, put the endorsement a sequence number (for sorting) and several other options. However, with under 200 pieces that can not go with a bulk mailing setup and I'm not really sure that you can barcode those unless they are going as EDDM.

Sorry for the assumption. I presume you do have a presort program, and are saying that you do not have enough addresses for a presort to produce Intelligent Mail barcodes (IMb).

If that is the case, add additional "seed" or dummy addresses to your data file - (the same valid DVP address, 50 ore more times over will do, as the minimum for an indicia on First Class mail is 200 pieces) - and then CASS, NCOA, and presort. Your software will permit a group selection - simply select the "seed" or "dummy" address, and delete them from the file.

At this point you could either export your file, WITH barcode data to your print process.
Or print directly from your presort program.

In either case, simply note that you are paying FIRST CLASS Non Presort rates, however you did manage to get a barcode.

Alternatively, USPS has functional Excel spreadsheets to calculate the Intelligent Mail barcode.
You would use those spreadsheets, export the data, and apply your barcode font to the IMB field.

Again, in both of the above cases, you get a barcode, yet still pay First Class postage.
You will have to use postage stamps, as indicia requirements are 200 pieces minimum.
Of course, speak with your Post Office BMEU; as they may come to a different conclusion.

Despite what I've told you above, the USPS still ..from time to time...to continue to spray a barcode in the barcode clear zone, even though you have provided a valid barcode. I've seen this happen one or two times in the past year.

We routinely "presort" sub-500 piece First Class mailings so each mail piece has an IMb and can be submitted using eDoc.  USPS actually encourages this.  Just need to ensure that "Single Piece" endorsement is applied per DMM especially when using material with pre-printed indicia.

    Hi.

That is good news that you found out how to encode IMb with fewer than 200 pieces for First Class Mail. Could you share your procedure from Accuzip? That would go a long way in helping others, and I am always looking for new solutions. Thanks!

    Accuzip instructions:

With the AccuZIP database open, you can simply pull the File menu down to Print – Labels and make sure you have Print Barcode and Intelligent Mail checked. You can chose to Output to a Disk File or Print direct to Label format from this window. See screen shot below.  AccuZIP creates two fields: IMBARCODE (Alpha characters) and IMBDIGITS (Numeric).

    Good morning All

Just a word of caution about barcoding Non-Presorted mail.

If the mail does not have an accompanying e-doc, the USPS identifies that mail as undocumented.  Meaning they have data with a mailer ID that cannot be matched to an e-doc.  At the present time, there is no assessment for undocumented mail, however this may change sometime soon.

    Have a great Friday Eve
