    Good morning all.

Do any of you have an experience with a square BRM piece.  One of my clients is asking about a 6 x 6 card that the recipient would tear off and return. I can't find anything in the DMM that says it must meet the aspect ration, however I've talked to two USPS people and one says it would be treated as a non-machinable letter, the other says BRM must be machine compatible.

    Your thoughts.

Have  a great week and my your postal problems be non existent.

I have never seen one like that.  Any square piece will mess with the automated sorting systems that they use at the USPS, hence the surcharge.  It's a BRM, so I would challenge the customer that it won't enhance response rates, so stick with the established guidelines, even if it is not clearly stated in the DMM.  If it is a design thing, just move the perforation point so it conforms.

    Sincerely,

I appreciate all of you who took time out to provide input.  We were lucky and after many discussions on the cons of a square BRC, we convinced the client to change it to 6" x 8", which makes the aspect ratio work.

    Thanx again.

    Refer to QSG 507b

QSG 507b Additional Services - Courtesy Reply Mail

At the end, it states that "All letter-size reply cards and envelopes [...] must meet the standards in 201.3.17"

That us the 201 Quick Service Guide which states that the aspect ration must be less than 1.3 or more than 2.5.

    George

Reference Section 100 Retail Mail (since as a return device that's what' it becomes.  Section 101.1.2 Non-Machinable -- 101.1.2.a says if the piece does not meet aspect ratio requirements it's non-machinable.

It's just like you and me mailing a square Christmas card (only there Hallmark nicely prints in the stamp area that additional postage might be required).
