Yes, the Trump Tweet may be an opportunity...or may complicate Postal Service Reform. In addition, we have 3 USPS Board of Governor nominees now before the Senate for confirmation.
The response to the Tweet may be very serious, especially if Members of Congress pick it up. The Tweet may be caught up in the President's views of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in light of the latter's ownership of the Washington Post. The fallout could be detrimental.
Idealliance has made no statement or action – nor has 21st Century Mail group (C21) of which Idealliance is involved and we look to taking the lead on postal reform. We are waiting to see:
· Whether the President will keep on this track or Friday's tweet was a one-off;
· Whether the press turns its attention to USPS pricing, or some interest groups try to leverage the Tweet in directions with which we are not comfortable; and
· Congressional response in general or as part of Senate confirmation of Governors.
We will also be checking quietly with our friends in Congress on their reaction.
2018 will be a pivotal and challenging year!
