New TC1617x

Has anyone been successful creating this form for for use in the EFI Fiery XF rip?. If you have could you please provide me with information as to how you created and installed it. I would like to use this form while creating profiles but am not sure how to get it into Fiery XF/Color Tools. I am able to run this through i1Profiler but would much rather not switch programs back and forth and try to stick with one program in the Linearization/Icc Profile creation process. Any help would be much appreciated.

I would just like to see the response to this as well. Thank you.

The only way I know of to use an unsupported chart in Fiery Printer Profiler is to measure it in an app that does support it and import the measurements. Print the TC-1617 chart using the intended output device/EPL, measure in i1P, save the measurements as a Profilemaker Lab CGATS (not spectral). From the Color Tools menu choose "Create Profile from Measurement" and import the CGATS file. At the end you'll need to place this file in the Working folder along with the EPL and use the Profile Connector to join them. This is probably more trouble than making the profile in i1P to begin with and then using Profile Connector, but if you lack a license for i1P this should work as an alternative.

Perhaps the upcoming XF v. 6.4 will directly support the TC-1617.

This is the procedure I am doing now as well. I was just curious if anyone had successfully implemented this chart into the Fiery XF library so you would not require another program. Streamlining the process you might say.

I haven't, but I'm not particularly motivated to do so. How often do you find yourself making profiles for XF that a 5-minute workaround is onerous? There are other reasons to slow down, for example, to examine and correct your data (which requires another app as well). And not to start a sh_t storm (though it might), why is it critical for you to use the TC-1617?

For me it is not a 5 minute work-around. I have 7 XF Rip stations scattered throughout the building and all are running on a windows platform. The other program(s) are on my desktop computer (Mac) and is located in the front of the building and is not portable. For me to implement the i1Profiler I have to print the target, take it back to the desk, scan, save, go back out to the station, upload and implement. If it did not correct values fully, then the process starts all over again. Was only trying to eliminate walking off shoe leather. And it is not important that I use the TC-1617, am always on the lookout for new and better ideas and I learned at a young age that you never stop learning. If the TC-1617 makes my job a little easier I am all for it. At this point the way I have to try and use it is not. As far as the profiles go on the XF, I am re-calibrating several machines weekly here lately. I as well was not wanting to start a pi__ing contest on this, just looking to make my life a  little easier.

It sounds as if you're continually reprofiling these 7 printers. Why?

If these stations all have XF, even if it's only a client, Color Tools will be present. i1Profiler can be installed for measuring on each machine without a license. Likewise, an XF client and i1P can be loaded on a laptop. The annoying part is the workaround, but the amount of shoe leather used should be the same.

It should not be necessary to completely reprofile the printer with the original It8 to realign its output, and the 234-patch chart included in Color Tools for optimization is an excellent choice--very nearly as good as the full profiling chart and measurable in a fraction of the time. If the printers in question are so unstable as to require weekly recalibration the entire problem might be rethought a little bit, e.g., the likelihood that the higher resolution of the TC-1617 (in near-neutrals) might be wasted.

It is my thought that these machines are not holding adjustments do to lack of proper maintenance on the press side, but until that is resolved this is what I am having to do weekly. It also seems that this discussion got way out of hand as I only was asking if anyone had included the TC1617 target into Fiery Rip. That being said I do however appreciate your input in this matter.

Kind of an occupational hazard of being on forums--one does tend to wander. Hopefully it's in interesting directions. I mentioned this matter because I think it's good to know that there are some tools for correcting this sort of wandering output without going to a large profiling chart. In XF, the optimizing tool is very accurate--more than a single profiling, but really pointless for any sort of process unless one chooses a small chart. There is the 1-click instant optimization in the Verify tab in Job Explorer--check it out. (It's meant for a specific job only but one can cheat and move the .3cc file to the Balance folder and use it further, and rename it.) If the drift is early large it's better to relinearize, or reprofile as you're doing--preferably both, but this is also a hassle, as you've accurately reported. Optimization is also specific to a source profile, so this has limitations as well.

ColorLogic's Profile Update function in the CoPrA profiling app is great for updating a profile with new measurements taken off a really tiny chart--like 88 patches for CMYK. It uses smart math to nudge the original characterization data points to make a new profile and is very, very accurate. Takes about 5 minutes and no skill whatsoever. It has been fantastic for realigning really unstable devices like toner-based printers but should also be ideal for wandering solvent inkjets and the like. You can make standard output or device-link profiles with it for realigning a printer to another one, if so desired. It gives detailed reports as well.
