  • 1.  Seeking Inkjet Digital Press Advice

    Posted 01-11-2018 10:10 AM
    Good Morning,

I have been contacted by a member seeking feedback from those that are currently using Canon's VarioPrint i300.  Please see their questions below:

Our company is currently researching inkjet digital press solutions.  Are there any members that have successfully replaced a production toner device with a Canon VarioPrint i300?  I know of some shops running this device for transactional materials that are most commonly producing jobs on offset papers.  That is not a good comparison to our work as we use a variety of substrates and more commonly coated papers than uncoated papers.  Our digital area primarily runs short run on demand and variable data projects.  I'm very concerned with limited substrates available for this equipment, for example 100# Gloss Cover is not an approved substrate and that's our most common substrate for postcards.   We're looking for any Good, Bad or Ugly information from current user's on Inkjet at this time.  Not information provided from manufacture's and sales folks of the equipment.

Also, if you have any recommendations for other devices please recommend.  I've briefly looked at the Konica Minolta KM-1.  We're a cut sheet shop so I think any of the roll feed options will not fit our work.

    Thanks in advance.

Apologies for the late response; perhaps these comments will still be useful. It is a common error to assign a lot of importance to a particular make and model of digital press with regard to controlling color output. The principle is always the same: These devices must be custom profiled for specific media to get optimal results. Profiling compensates for differences in devices and media. Every DFE/RIP has its own set of controls, but they all do the same thing: They prelimit the ink for the specific media type and linearize the output, and they enable or disable color management. No two DFEs are laid out identically, but they all have these features and can be quickly figured out by any experienced person.
